Facebook Hits 1 Billion Users

04 October 2012

A million users isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A billion users!

Facebook has just hit a historic milestone as it surpasses 1 Billion active users. Yes, a billion.

To put it in perspective, if Facebook was a country, it would be the world’s third most populous country in the world, trailing only by a couple hundred of million behind China and India. If the social media juggernaut existed back in 1804 when the world’s population first hit 1 billion, that would mean that everyone on the planet have an active Facebook account.

Active” is a very important word here as the milestone number does not include the 8.7% fake users that Facebook previously reported back in August. Although it is not clear as to how the company define the word “active”, but the number is still astronomical compared to the active users of Google+, which recently reported to be only around 100 million. This clearly highlights Facebook domination in social media world.

Facebook co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced the company’s achievement on their official blog:

This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.

…Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.”

Based on the company’s IPO and earning calls data, it can be clearly seen how Facebook have grown massively in the last two years.
